FusionRP: The Remains [Closed]

A collection of ruins of smaller English Castles are strewn about the area, with a more fantasy-like castle towering in the background, not too far of a walk away. These ruins of castles vary in amounts of destruction, some being only the skeleton of a structure.

Many of these are filled with "ghost hunting" equipment from the 1970s - large radio equipment, bricks of handheld devices, and also some enormously hefty audio & camera equipment to record it all. It's unclear if it actually works or simply sits there, humming ominously.

Surrounding these ruins are various bits of thick English wilderness. Sometimes a few rare murder scenes can be found here and there, of swords, spattered with old blood, hanging from a tree, historical guns sprouting from the castle parapets like flowers, cult-like ritual circles drawn in chalk and blood, a lone pyre where someone was to be burned at the stake...

The entities that populate the area are shadows that only interact with shadow. It's hard to tell which shadow is distinctly which, but sometimes you can recognize them by a hairstyle or body shape, and it's possible that a shadow could be someone that's been met before.

Manny hadn't gotten too far away from the castle before he had turned and sat down on what remained of a wall, one that could have been a garden wall or perhaps one of a building? It was hard to tell. The entire area seemed completely different to how he remembered it before, and he found himself regretting leaving the mask behind...

He'd just assumed it would not work without Beetle's odd magics, or without the price of the memory and recognition affection, but had he even stopped to... try? Why didn't he at least hold onto it?? He could just get up and go back in, grab it off the floor, in theory... But also in theory, and by the looks of the area, it'd sit there for quite a while untouched, or be gone already. If he really wanted to visit with ... whoever he had been during the last 13 hours, he either already gave up his chance or could go back whenever and start that case. Preferably with some assistance.

Speaking of assistance, he was hoping someone else would wander out of the castle. Not Beetle, but anyone else would be nice, just so he wouldn't have to be walking around alone until he found civilization again... or food... or proper bandages for his burned leg... Yeah, it'd be really nice to not be alone when he inevitably passed out walking through thickets towards another, probably abandoned as well, larger castle. At least that one would hopefully have enough height and a working stairwell to find... somewhere else.

Yukira’s vision filled with white, the brightness blinding her temporarily as she stepped through, until a cool breeze parted the mist and she was outside, stretching her wings in what felt like the first time in ages. She turned, but there was no door, just what remained of a stone wall, broken and crumbling. Where was she….the memories of the night filtered in, but like the illusions seemed to be behind a shimmering veil- bits peeked through more clearly- the dance, like dream, a battle of mirrors and a misfire, and Aem…

Where she needed to go….if that was the case, then the door she had stepped through could potentially lead her to Aem…if Aem was still alive…though that was where Yuki wanted to be, she had no idea if that was where she was needed. Grumbling to herself over vague words and prattling merchants, she picked her way through a sea of broken stone walls and skeletal ruins.

Something about this place felt…not wrong really. But off. Figures seemed to flit on the edge of her vision, yet when she turned there was nothing there. Uzi, sensing something too, raised themself up to stand propped on her head, looking this way and that and chattering quietly.
She wasn’t sure what she was looking for, but ghosts and whispers were not something she was exactly keen to deal with at the moment.

Peering around another crumbling bit of castle, she finally was able to get a decent view of the area- dense wilderness encroached on either side, while further dilapidated structures of various sizes and decay scattered throughout. Rising above, not terribly far away, was a different castle, one with turrets and spires that seemed…remarkably familiar. But she didn’t contemplate the possibilities of coincidental architecture for long, for Uzi suddenly leaped off her head, chirping as they pranced over to someone resting on a stone wall not too far away. Her eyes widened as recognition hit, a mix of emotions she did not have time to pull apart rising in her gut as she let out his name in an incredulous whisper…

[Ghost Roll: 6]

When he opened his eyes, there were stars. For a moment, he lay there, thoughts empty save for the tickle of grass against his cheek, the soft pulse of an incipient headache, the chill bite of the air, and the spectacle of stars, so many stars, above. Reflexively, he looked for familiar stars above him, hunting out the patterns of constellations he'd learned long ago. The stars above seemed to defy him. Anything which felt familiar slipped away behind a shadow. A cloud? A brief, dark, blankness which slid across the sky and seemed to leave the stars rearranged in its passing. He shivered.

Two faces looked down on him, nearly translucent to the point of being invisible. He felt, more than saw in their expressions, a gentle tug of concern.

He remembered.

It felt like a dream, like a nightmare. Incomplete and hazy, full strangers that were impossibly familiar and scenes loosely sketched and patched with dream logic. He couldn't even follow the memory to the end. It, like so many dreams, seemed to have petered out just when things were really going somewhere, as if the REM cycle had a perverse grudge against closure and complete narratives.

Like some dreams, it felt real, as if he could find his way back to the castle and find the dancers still there, endlessly waltzing through endless nights.

The ghosts were very concerned. He looked up at them, through them to the shifting stars above.

"It's okay," he told them, "Just a nightmare...."

He closed his eyes, feeling the headache pound a little at his temples. Exhaustion clung to him like a weight. He knew he should get up and seek shelter, but it would be okay to lie here a little while longer...

When he opened his eyes again the sun was streaming bright into his eyes and if the clouds above sometimes seemed to skip a couple frames as they sailed gently across the sky, well, it was less obtrusive than the blinking and shifting of last night's stars. He sat up, feeling patches of dampness where dew had been trapped between his body and the ground. It felt gross, but it while it wasn't super warm now, the sun and light breeze would probably dry that out soon enough.

He stood up and stretched, taking a brief glance around himself for obvious threats and to see if he recognized where he was. None and...no. His bag was on the ground. He picked it up and looked through it. Everything he remembered being in there was still there. He swung the strap over his shoulder and looked around again. Forest and the crumbling ruins of some ancient buildings. Distant glimpses of more buildings some distance away and a large semi-intact building. Maybe a manor house. Or part of a castle?

As he stepped forward, he caught a glimpse of movement between crumbling walls and cracked columns. He took a step back and to the side, hoping to put a chunk of stone between himself and whoever or whatever was there, at least until he could figure out who they were and if it was safe.

Owain groaned, rolling himself onto his back, from where he'd been laying face first on the ground. His head was foggy. What happened...? He remembered falling, but... his head ached, with vague fragments of memories drifting through his mind, never quite piecing together into a full image.

He slowly picked himself up off the ground, joints cracking as he stretched out. How long had he been laying there? He dusted off his coat - not too damp, so he couldn't have been there too long-

His coat?

He looked down at himself. His normal outfit, but with the addition of a long, thick coat. Plain and sturdy, a dull faded grey-black colour, the edges rough and torn as if from years of use.

It felt... familiar? Trying to remember made his head throb more, like it was resisting the thoughts.

Well, he could think about that later. For now, the warmth was appreciated. From the looks of things, the rest of his things were the same - necklace still there, he noted with a relieved sigh, and his outfit almost unchanged, aside from one belt now over the top of the new coat, more easily accessible for his sword.

A quick glance around found it to his side, resting against a crumbling stone wall. Another look around to check his surroundings more thoroughly - a small ruined building made of rough stone, two of the walls collapsed down into rubble. Beyond that, thick woodlands.

A familiar enough environment to him, though he didn't recognise it specifically.

His thoughts were interrupted by a chirping sound - something nearby? Time to investigate the surroundings, then. He took his sword (with a quick check for damage, though it looked the same as always), swung it up onto his back, and slowly, cautiously headed out of the building to see what he could find.

Hopefully, something or someone friendly. But if not... well, the situation was one he knew well, at least.

"Oh, hello there. You seem awfully familiar," Manny hummed, leaning over to offer chin scratches to the odd creature that had approached him. He hadn't really noticed which direction it had come from, but was delighted to pet it anyways; at least he wasn't alone anymore.

But he's quickly distracted, and his internal questions answered, as his view turns to meet the eyes of one familiar princess and warrior. His face softened, and he smiled, but it wasn't a joyous one, more one of solemn acceptance.

"I had been hoping rumors of your arrival were greatly exaggerated, but am pleased to see you anyways." He scooted over a bit on the wall and patted the spot next to him, inviting her to sit down.

"I don't know about you, but I've had helluva night, and you're looking a little... lost? Maybe we both need a moment to orientate ourselves." He sighed, eyes glancing across the ground for a moment.

"... It's been a while, huh? You've gotten a new look, I see."

Uzi vibrated, pleased, as they received some welcome chin scratches, and without so much as a glance back at Yukira clambered up and curled around Manny’s neck. Settled into their new resting spot, they finally trained their eyes on Yuki, who still seemed to be buffering from the surprise of seeing the detective here of all places.

“… It's been a while, huh? You've gotten a new look, I see.”

“A little while?? A LITTLE WHILE??” Or perhaps she had simply been cycling through a series of emotions, and this statement finally settled her on one. “It’s been ten years, ten years of hiding and fighting and wondering if the next assassin might actually meet their mark…Ten years of never knowing if my trust would end in inevitable betrayal...”

“And then there is this place, with its fae magic and beautiful strangers from other realms and so many things I don’t understand.” She was pacing at this point, tail flicking and hands clamped into fists at her side as the words kept tumbling out. “And then my magic was unsealed and suddenly I was a dragon and then suddenly not and I’m terrified if I don’t figure this out one day I’ll get stuck forever as a beast and…”

She sat down with a huff, head in her hands as she tried to hold back the tears of frustration that were so eager to form.

“Sorry I….there’s been a lot and seeing you just…seems to release everything.” She released her head from her hands and grasped the edge of the wall tightly, staring at the ground. “I know you tried to warn me and it’s not your fault but….it still hurt when you disappeared.”

A voice wafted between the crumbling stone and the opportunistic trees and bushes reclaiming the area. Jones' ears flicked forward to catch it, though the speaker was not all that far away. And familiar, though it took Jones a minute to place the voice.

Manny. From the hotel. And Olive Garden. From the sound of his voice and the bits of conversation that Jones heard, it seemed he was talking to someone he knew. That....did not give Jones many clues. He seemed to recall that Manny knew, or thought he knew, just about every person he ran into here. Jones himself had been one of the rare exceptions.... Well, Manny had not seemed malicious and the ghosts had liked him. But who was h-

“A little while?? A LITTLE WHILE??” Yuki's voice cut through the stillness of the area, tone wavering across several layers of emotion in sharp contrast to Manny's calmer, gentler voice. Jones' ears flicked back defensively for a moment, but he stepped forward a little, listening. The ghosts drifted forward with him, echoing, in a way, his interest in the conversation and magnifying the flicker of concern that passed through his mind.

Yuki also knew Manny it seemed, though it had been some time since she had seen him last. Words tumbled out of her. Unexplained, incomplete references to whatever past troubles they shared and a rush of words filled with the fear and worries she had over this world and the new troubles it had given her.

"...and I’m terrified if I don’t figure this out one day I’ll get stuck forever as a beast and…"

Jones' gaze dropped involuntarily to his hooves and his mind went to his own unspoken fears. He barely caught the end of Yuki's words, but it seemed she had been able to stem the flood of feelings for now.

Jones fidgeted with the strap of the messenger bag as he thought. Manny and Yuki were okay. He had a lot of questions still about Manny, but no major concerns yet. And Yuki... Yuki would probably not let him come to harm. This just seemed like an awkward moment to break into their conversation. Just barging into the middle of this like, 'oh, hello, lovely day for an emotional reunion scene isn't it?' seemed, even to Jones, like it might be rude and unwelcome.

Instead, Jones walked a few steps away to a piece of tumbled masonry about the right size for a seat and resolved to sit and wait for a better moment to interrupt. It did not occur to him that it might be even more polite to move far enough away that he could no longer eavesdrop, intentionally or not, on the subsequent conversation.

Owain looked around as he walked out of the ruined building, stepping over half-hidden rubble and crumbled stone bricks that had long been covered by plants. There were a lot of ruins here, spread out throughout the area. Around the edges, the woods surrounded them, creating a natural border.

The trees seemed to get denser the further away they got. Owain squinted out through them, his eyes catching on a few less natural features - a collection of items, weapons perhaps, hanging from a tree in the distance.

Maybe it would be best to stick to exploring these ruins for now. The noises he'd heard had come from that direction anyway. He turned to walk further into the ruins.

"A little while?? A LITTLE WHILE??"

A familiar voice, very close by. Owain stepped around the edge of a ruined wall, the area opening up into more of a clearing. He easily recognised Yukira, from the hotel earlier - pacing back and forth as she ranted to... Manny, sat on one of the ruined walls.

It was good to see two familiar faces, in spite of the way his head twinged at the sight of them.

Yukira continued to vent, her anger quickly fading into upset and frustration. Owain hesitated - this might be a bad time to interrupt. Maybe he should turn back, give them some space for a moment-

Owain swore internally as a branch broke under his foot. Well... they'd probably heard that. Might as well just get this out of the way. He slowly headed over in their direction, with a vague wave of his hand in greeting.

Hmmn, the feeling of the friend on his shoulders was very familiar, much more than the initial chirps. Something in the back of Manny's mind kept trying to recognize them... They were not with Yukira the first time Manny had met her, but he had definitely met this creature before... He just couldn't place where, even though it felt like it was on the tip of his tongue.

As the frustrated words of his old friend washed over him, Manny couldn't help but tearing up a little himself, even though he remained calm and collected with a warm smile. As Yukira sat down, he scooted closer to put his arm around her shoulders, being mindful of her interesting new limbs...

"I know, It... it hurt me too. I don't know why so many people I've met before are showing up here now, and I hope... everything turns out fine. But it's been so nice to see you, and how strong you've become." He squeeze her closer softly, the best he could do for a hug in their current position. "And if I know anything, even with these new... dragon? Dragon magics? I don't know much about magic, but even unsealed, if it's your magics I'm sure you'll figure it out. You're extremely smart, I've seen you figure out much more difficult things."

There's a snap nearby, one that much sounded like a footstep, but Manny is still caught up in his friend. He withdrew his arm to push back some of her hair on the side closer to him, getting a good view of her face again, encouraging her to look up from the dirt, "That and, I know this doesn't really help, but I think the scales are really cute. Bring out the light in your eyes."

Though now movement catches his peripheral vision, and Manny turns to look over to see another familiar face. He gently waves back at Owain, not sure if this is his wish being granted or not, but grateful either way.

Unconsciously Yukira stretched her wing, both to allow him to scoot closer and to drape her wing around, protectively even if the rest of her body remained tense and closed off. She bit her lip as his words washed over her, desperately trying to hold back tears- it felt like she was transported back in time, small and alone and lost in her own world. Until he had come along, that is, saving her from her own despair with words and care and comfort.

You're extremely smart, I've seen you figure out much more difficult things.

She scoffed lightly, but her shoulders had relaxed somewhat, leaning ever so slightly into his touch. Her ears pricked at the sound of something snapping nearby, but as she looked up, she felt Manny’s hand brushing back her hair, soft words distracting her from the interruption.

"That and, I know this doesn't really help, but I think the scales are really cute. Bring out the light in your eyes.”

Her cheeks and ears flushed involuntarily as she looked back up at Manny- the scales, they had erased so much, to see them as cute…- but he was already distracted, waving to someone…Owain, she remembered, though their meeting felt so long ago. She waved and gave a soft ‘hello again’, but stayed were she was, avoiding eye contact as she waited for her face to return to its normal color.
