As usual, a lot of Guiding Light's meaning was implied, and Ada listened, nodding, brow furrowed with the smallest touch of confusion on her face as she tried to keep up, ignoring the bathtub's occupant for the moment. An "involuntary meeting with the host" -- had Beetle appeared here? Or had Guiding Light been teleported away? Just now?? What did they discuss? Was "meeting" being used genuinely or sarcastically?

"Then, Brightest Star attacked you, and caused this damage?" she asked, to confirm she understood that much at least. She didn't quite sound worried in the way a human might -- there was no distress; just concern. "I don't think I've met Brightest Star yet. Are they here, in this--"

She startled, all the other questions she had queued suddenly interrupted as the creature in the bathtub made its presence known by squishing a little further up her arm, and with a surprising amount of force, began to pull. She tugged against it but only succeeded in slowing the animal's effort as it pulled her hand gradually into the water.

"Hm." No strain showed on her face as motors revved internally for a second, strangely silent, to pull her hand back out of the water. At full power, she was stronger, but she couldn't maintain that for very long -- and given her charge at the moment, a strength contest was probably not the wisest use of power. She lowered herself beside the bathtub to set down the portal device, and reached over with her gloved hand to delicately attempt to unwrap the tentacle(?) stubbornly coiled around her wrist.

"Discouragement might be very helpful, thank you, darling!" she added cheerfully. "I was trying to drain the bathtub to see if there was anything inside, but the animal -- my best guess is octopus? -- seems to be the thing blocking it."

"Then, Brightest Star attacked you, and caused this damage?"

    "That'd be accurate."

"Are they here, in this--" She cut herself off, distracted by the thing around her arm. SPARK answered the question anyway.

    "Potentially. Unknown."

She was being delicate with the appendage. They could follow that lead.

They set their beam to constant and low, aiming a few inches from Ada's hand. If the tentacle started to struggle and threaten her, they'd boost the power and just sever the thing.

The tentacle curled back around to try to twist itself around the fingers that were pulling at it, gently prying back. Then the beam of light hit it. It tightened for a moment, grip spasming and yanking.

It recoiled a moment later, tentacle twisting in on itself in a silent knot of pain before falling into the water with a splash of fetid liquid. The tub gurgled for a moment and then there was nothing but the faint noise of water lapping up against the edge of the tub as the ripples from the tentacle's sudden descent slowly decreased.

Owain's brief search of the room didn't bring up too much of note. None of the books drew a lot of attention, but the other things around the room were a bit more interesting.

Various decorations on the walls, including three well-lit paintings. Assorted curiosities around the room in protective glass cases. And on one of the tables, a pile of papers and books, presumably left behind by whoever had used this room last.

The Blind Lady, having let Morne know about the key card, let her attention move to the room around her as well, mentioning that they had a lot to search, and perhaps they should leave the books 'til last or split their attentions around the room.

Splitting attention sounded like a decent plan to Owain. No point in all crowding around the same area and getting in each others way. The Blind Lady moved over to check out the papers and books, so Owain walked over to the paintings to inspect those.

Art was a good place to hide things in plain sight. You could get away with hiding a lot of secrets or codes in art - in a well decorated space, any oddities could be overlooked as symbolism or artistic choice.

If nothing else, it was worth checking. One of the paintings might have a hidden code, or a clue to point them in the right direction.

Subtly lit by gallery-style lighting and framed in elegant picture frames, the paintings that drew The Borrow's gaze, look like this:

(content warning for cluster of insects(?))
    Spoiler

Picture credits (and links to larger copies of my "improved" versions):
    Personal Values - Rene Magritte
The Persistence of Memory - Salvador Dali
I actually don't know if this third image has a title, but it's from the book Masquerade by Kit Williams.

Morne turned away from the jars and their unsettling, frustrating contents and checked on his, for the lack of a better word, teammates.

The Blind Lady was poring over the papers and books on the table, the ones that looked like they contained fragments of poetry. He couldn't tell if her air of concentration was due to finding something of interest, or simply an effect of trying to read through a blindfold. Probably best to leave her to it, either way. He turned his attention to The Borrowed.

The older gentleman was examining the paintings on the wall with a serious expression. Morne followed his gaze and looked at the paintings, really noticing them for the first time. They were....peculiar. A room filled with mundane objects at the wrong size, strange figures dancing (like their own masquerade?), and a queasily painted depiction of clocks hanging limply in a tree. That one seemed familiar. Probably something famous enough that he ought to know it, but art had never been a priority. He wondered what The Borrowed made of them. Did he find them strange, too? Or did understand them, even like them?

He approached the man and stood adjacent to him for a moment, looking at the paintings and trying to see something, anything of note. His ears flicked back, twitching slightly with the irritation he still felt.

"Well..." he said, after a moment, "Is it art? Or a clue?"

Well. She had kind of been hoping that she'd discover some brilliant secret clue that Morne had missed, but no such epiphany was forthcoming. Rats.

Putting down the poetry, she looked around the room again through her hazy blindfold. It seemed too obviously rude to go check the curios next, as surely Morne would notice her following along behind him like a disapproving schoolteacher checking his work. So instead, the Blind Lady went to look at the objects displayed on the walls, leaving the paintings to the menfolk for now.

She grabbed the side of the bathtub with a small cry of surprise as the octopus coiled tighter in response to Guiding Light's beam, tugging and spasming before it finally pulled away and splashed back into the water. She did not flinch, only blinked, surprised, before noting small spots where the bathtub's unidentified grime had splashed onto her dress with a look of disappointed dismay. Though her expression brightened unnaturally quickly as she looked up at Guiding Light.

"Thank you, darling!" she smiled, sounding more like she was thanking the other AI for fetching a screwdriver or getting the lights. She shook off her hand again -- still wet, still the sensation of liquid on its surface, still strange -- and stood. "Let me... check the rest of the room, first. I expected this to be straightforward, but all things considered, it seems it might be easier to put a hole in the bathtub itself to drain it -- what do you think, dear?" She stepped carefully over to the toilet, the only other closed container, both hands held a bit awkwardly away from her dress as she moved.

"I did want to let you know, before we go too much further, that my battery's getting a bit low.... if we don't finish things up quickly over here, I might need some help accessing my charger," she added, chatting over her shoulder. "Oh! And likewise! If you need a hand with repairs later, darling, I'm happy to offer any help I can -- I know self-repairs can be awkward. I'm not familiar with your technology, but I have a few years' experience as a roboticist, and I learn quickly!"

She glanced for just a moment at Guiding Light, expression attentive and alert to their response, before turning to poke around at the toilet, not thinking to send any further signals of her split attention & interest as she investigated. Being nearly the height of the ceiling, she easily peered into the flush tank, and also flipped open the toilet lid. Hopefully this one wasn't housing any exotic pets!

The objets d'art on the walls of the library are scattered here and there, filling unsightly gaps on the walls between tapestries and paintings less lovingly lit than the ones The Borrowed was examining. The other paintings are dimmer, less well-maintained, years of dust and the discoloration of once-protective shellac have rendered the subjects as shadowy and distorted. The tapestries too have suffered with time and neglect. Faded colors render patterns and scenes illegible.

Between the forgotten artworks are hung fragments of friezes showing ancient heroes and gods, a display of pinned butterflies, an ancient map of the Known World ( crumbling at the edges), and an ornate ceremonial cape made of brilliant feathers and beads.

The toilet is filthy. Rust rings discolored water in the tank and the bowl. The lid is spotted and stained and when lifted, the seat and rim of the bowl below seemed to be crusted with some substance which has gone brown and dry. The liquid in the bowl is murky and brown and clotted with the remains of dissolved toilet paper.

Blissfully, nothing seems to stir beneath the surface.

"I expected this to be straightforward, but all things considered, it seems it might be easier to put a hole in the bathtub itself to drain it -- what do you think, dear?"

SPARK peered at the murky liquid, but whatever was in that tub was as resistant to their other observations as it was on the visual spectrum.

"Fine with me, but you may want to step outside first. One of us is a lot more stain-resistant than the other, if you catch my drift."

"I did want to let you know, before we go too much further, that my battery's getting a bit low.... if we don't finish things up quickly over here, I might need some help accessing my charger,"

SPARK looked over sharply, at least more so than they already were. "How much time do you have left?"

"Oh! And likewise! If you need a hand with repairs later, darling, I'm happy to offer any help I can -- I know self-repairs can be awkward. I'm not familiar with your technology, but I have a few years' experience as a roboticist, and I learn quickly!"

They bounced a ping through their hard light systems. The offline planes were in a recovery mode, completely inaccessible, and it seemed several were likely to join them eventually as their stability degraded.

"Assuming we don't find a halfway decent diagnostics kiosk, I think I better take you up on that. Better you than one of the monkeys."

They took position near the tub, ready to drill a narrow hole to let the liquid drain - after Ada and her dress cleared the splash zone.
